The first American car with a true automatic transmission was the 1940 Oldsmobile. This transmission was called the Hyrdo-Matic. The Hyrdo-Matic, was developed by GM engineer, Earl Thompson. The Hydro-Matic went through continual upgrading and refinements through 1955.
