i have a 96 and its probably the same or very similar. It looks like you have four on my car but only two are o2 sensors. If your cadalitic converters are shot then its pretty much useless to change your sensors though cause they'll get messed up again. I've learned that Ford only builds these parts to last five years so your cadilitc converters probably ARE shot.

To replace the oxygen sensors on a 2000 Mercury Cougar, you will first need to locate the sensors, which are typically located on the exhaust system near the catalytic converter. You will then need to disconnect the electrical connector and use an oxygen sensor socket to remove the sensor. Before installing the new sensor, make sure to apply anti-seize compound to the threads to prevent seizing in the future. Finally, install the new sensor, reconnect the electrical connector, and clear any error codes using a diagnostic scanner.
