You need the special tool. I think it's even called something like "joint remover". I believe you can find it in of hardware stores such as Advance Auto Parts, Auto zone and so on.
There is no way to know without reading the code. Use a code scanner to figure out what's wrong. They are available at auto parts stores and are quite easy to use.
