Hey David==one goes to the light or gauge on the dash and the other one goes to energize the field. Good luckJoe ==new answer== on a delco alternator, one terminal is a feed back that lets the regulator get a look at battery voltage. it should be hooked up to the battery. the other is a a "flash" terminal that starts the alternator charging, and commonly comes off the idiot lite. see the answer to "wiring a one wire alternator".
More than likely they connect to the positive and negative polarities of the power source.
It is at the rear of the alternator, in the plug that hold the wires that are incerted at the rear.
take the belt off the alternator and take out the 3 bolts that hold the alternator to the engine and unplug the wires that plug into it and you have it off.
Richard Gora is also using the older Geo alternator from the 3 cylinder models. This alternator has 3 wires. One is drirectly from the battery and 2 others are (or more correctly were) in a green plug. These are the power from the key and the lead to the "no charge" light. My problem is that I do not have the plug and need to determine which of the two wires goes where. Any help ? Thanks !!! Doc PS I have an ohmeter etc etc fcorp1@tampabay.rr.com
If the light remains on then the system still isn't charging as it should. Check the plug on the alternator and also that the wires to the alt have a good connection.
There should be a heavy wire called the Alternator output wire, It carries power from the alternator to power your accessories and to maintain your battery. The smaller wires usually in a plug are either the alternator's voltage sense, Stator/ACurrent/Tachometer output, regulator/indicator light. or if its an Externaly regulated alternator they will be alternator Field, Stator/ACurrent/Tachometer. hope this helps
go to the store and get a new plug for your year of car cut the wires hook them up to the same color tape or shrink wrap exposed wire plug into alternator good to go
Wires between Alternator and Battery, and between Alternator plug connector and fuse box etc.
Ignition switch, coils, starter, alternator, spark plugs. plug wires, battery.
The wires in the plug are backwards. switch them around
Power plug. Usually a round black plug with two small wires.
I have a 2.0 1995 Mercury mystique the battery charge light was on no output on old alternator. Replaced alternator No output from new alternator "charge light out" (wiggle test wires& re-check wires) at alternator *still no output* is there a fuse that could be the problem or just another bad alternator... I would check the alternator plug before getting another alternator, it may be bad. And is a lot cheaper to replace.
