The system is in your car to recycle vapors released from gasoline in your gas tank. Instead of allowing the vapors to escape to the air, the government started requiring auto makers back in the 70's to trap those vapors and burn them in your engine. What makes up the system? Your gas tank, gas cap, evaporator canister, hoses, check valves and a purge valve solenoid that controls it all and triggers your check engine light to come on when there is a vacuum leak in the system (which usually ends up being you did not tighten the gas cap when you last filled up which can trigger p code 442 (evap system leak).
