It's a small circuit board built on to the side of the fuel pump assy. It can be changed separately but it costs a fortune considering what it is. Around $80 if I remember correctly. Once you go to all of the trouble to get to it you may as well change the entire fuel pump assembly and get everything new. Those are a small fortune as well. The best price I found was frm www.gmpartsdirect.com and it was still around $300. You have to drain and drop the fuel tank to get it out. It isn't really much of a project if you've done much automotive work but it's not something for a complete novice either.

On the 2001 Ford Focus, the fuel level sensor is located in the fuel tank, integrated into the fuel pump assembly. To access it, you typically need to remove the rear seats and the access panel or drop the fuel tank itself. The sensor monitors the fuel level and sends this information to the fuel gauge on the dashboard.
