In the gas tank, gas tank must be removed to access.

Another way to access the fuel pump is to lift the box (pickup bed) up off of the frame. It is retained by 8- 15 mm bolts, 4 on each side. Remove the 3 bolts on each side that are closest to the front of the truck. The two bolts (1 on each side) at the rear of the truck you should not remove- just loosen about half way. This will allow you to raise the box like a dump truck, and the two bolts you loosened will keep the box straight when it is time to align the bolts with the holes after you replace the fuel pump. Lifting the box requires a floor jack ($20.00 @ auto parts stores). You will need a few different length 2x4 or better still, 4x4's to safely secure the truck box while you replace the pump. The pump will be easily accessible at this point. Lubricate the box to frame bolts before you put them back on. (You'll thank me!) This method is preferred by many as dropping the fuel tank is a nightmare with any fuel in it. YouTube has videos of this method. I changed the fuel pump on my 96 Ram today using this method with no problems. The fuel pump assembly also includes the fuel filter and fuel pressure regulator so you can take care of all three with one shot. Good luck!
