On the 89 2.2L automatic, while looking at the engine from the front of the car,it's an aluminum "box" on the frame between the battery compartment/fuses and engine. If you have someone sit in the car and run the shifter thru the gears, U will see the linkage on the top of the neutral switch move. The chiltons manual tells how to reset the switch.. which I gave up on and just bought a new one. Autozone had one in stock for about 40 bucks I think. It was real easy to change - and I'm not a mechanic in any way, shape, or form. If you have a standard tranny, I'm not sure if it's in the same place. Not to plug a website, BUT, www.mx6.com rocks for info and guidance on the MX6.. I have even got spare parts from members there. Happy motoring!
Would not have a neutral safety switch - may have have a clutch safety switch usually located at the upper end of the clutch pedal under the dash area

The neutral safety switch on a 2003 Mazda Tribute is typically located on the transmission. Specifically, it can be found on the side of the transmission case, near where the shift linkage connects. This switch prevents the engine from starting unless the transmission is in the "Park" or "Neutral" position. If you're having trouble locating it, consulting the vehicle's service manual can provide detailed diagrams and guidance.
neutral safety switch/ or reverse switch faulty thanks. how would i go about replacing the safety switch? is it difficult?
The autos do not have a safety switch....They have a sensor located in the trans itself that tells the ecu if its in neutral/park.....I believe its a 3 pin plug going into the trans itself,.....trace it and see where it leads.....You may be able to hook up a toggle switch..
switch is either on side of transmission, or under the dash
Neutral safety switch improperly adjusted or going bad
The fuel safety switch in a 1994 Mazda MX6 is located on the inside of the fuel tank. This is very tricky to locate, so it would be better to leave it up to the professionals toÊmaintain.
