The sensor is behind the grill on the top and towards the driver side. The part at NAPA is $19 and change. Just take the old one out with a wrench of proper size, install new and start your engine. I have done that on my 2001 Supercrew and that solved my temperature sensor problems since mine was giving the wrong temp and since our winters up here in the North East are harsh on those parts.
The part number is TS4005 and the description is A C Ambient Air Temp. Hope that helps.

Speed sensor on a 2001 ford expedition
There are several things that can cause your 2001 Ford F2 50 outside temperature gauge to quit working. The most common cause is a malfunctioning outside temperature sensor.
The outside air temperature sensor is on the front of the car, near the nearside foglight on the plastic grill. It looks like the end of a Hilti nail.

There are several temperature sensors on a 2001 Chevy Monte Carlo. A temperature sensor for outside temperature is located near the passenger side wheel underneath the vehicle. A manifold temperature sensor is located in the manifold. There is also an air temperature sensor in the hose that leads from the air filter to the motor. Still another temperature sensor is the thermostat in the upper radiator hose near the water pump.
The outside temperature sensor is on the driver's side next to the fog light (or where the foglight would be). It looks like a black pencil tip sticking out of a little hole in the black plastic.

It is possible that the outside temperature sensor is defective. As a result the heat only works at certain electronic temperature control settings.
If it's the same as a 1999 model, the outside temperature module is located in front of the radiator and behind the front bumper.

A 2001 Ford Expedition cylinder head temperature sensor typically resembles a small, cylindrical metal or plastic component with electrical connectors on one end. It is often located near the cylinder head and may have a threaded portion for installation. The sensor is designed to monitor the temperature of the cylinder head to ensure optimal engine performance and prevent overheating. Its size and shape can vary slightly, but it generally fits within the engine's tight space.
