The cooling systems is a closed system with the resiviour part of that system. Coolant is added to the resiviour cap. This is different from other cars as the resiviour is not usually pressurized. In the s-series it is.

Follow the top radiator hose to the engine, what that mounts to is the thermostat housing, remove this and there is your thermostat. * ** *** **** ***** Actually, on my 1997 SL2, the thermostat is on the bottom radiator hose. From the radiator top hose follow back to where it enters the block. remove the hose and the thermostat housing and the thermostat is inside.
