The temperature sensor (sends coolant temp to the PCM) is located in the top of the thermostat housing. The temperature sender (sends coolant temp to the gauge) is located in the bottom front of the same housing.

Be sure you are replacing the temp sending unit for a gauge application. The parts counter person may have given you one for an idiot light.
The 4.3 temp sending unit for the gauge is located in the drivers side head between spark plugs 3 & 5.

The temperature sensing unit is located on the water outlet. The water outlet is the housing that contains the thermostat and 2 engine temperature sensors. The sending unit for the fan is the first sensor closest to the front of the car. The sensor towards the rear of the housing operates the engine temperature gauge. It has only 1 small connector wheras the sendiing unit for the fan has a larger connector with 2 wires instead of 1.
