The coolant temperature sensor on a 1997 Lincoln Continental is located on top of the engine, near the upper radiator hose. It constantly relays the engine's temperature to the computer.

not sure the car does not want to shift out of first gear after it gets hot. Thinking it is the speed sensor.
On a 1997 Lincoln Continental : The Mass Air Flow sensor is between the cone shaped engine air filter and the engine air intake tube . It is INSIDE a round shaped plastic housing
the sensor should be located on top of the engine near the left hand side, looks like a spark plug, you have to take it off with a special socket. ask the parts store where you go and purchase the socket.
