The vss is on top of the trans-axle, behind the engine on the passenger side.
There is NO VSS on a 3.4 Liter V8 Taurus SHO. There is only a cap on the transmission body where one USED to be. The SHO uses input from the ABS system to determine vehicle speed.

It sounds like the VSS has failed. If the VSS fails, it can cause the symptoms you are describing. Check the wiring and make sure your VSS is properly plugged in before you replace the VSS. One notable exception, If your vehicle is a Generation 3 Ford Taurus SHO. The SHO uses the ABS wheel sensors to generate a signal to the computer to calculate speed. If this is the case it is recommended you take your vehicle to reputable shop for servicing, as the ABS system is a complex and important safety system for your vehicles safe operation.
Yes - the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) feeds the data to the speedometer, so if it goes bad, so does the speedometer, odometer, the transmission starts acting real funky, and a myriad of other symptoms. See "Related Questions" below for more about replacing the VSS
The VSS in a 2001 Ford Escape is located on the left rear side of the transmission. There is only about an inch of it that can be seen.

At the top of the output shaft housing on the passenger's side of the transmission. If you reach down behind the back of the engine on the passeger's side, down to the transmission housing, you will probably put your hand right on it. It will be covered by a cardboard and foil protective cover.
Replace it.......its one bolt on the side of the transmission.....
