The automatic transaxle fluid dipstick is near the brake fluid reservoir ( going towards the passenger side )
you can change the fluid, but not the filter. drain the fluid from the drain plug on the bottom of the transmission and refill from the dipstick. the filter is only accessable by overhauling the transmission
It is possible that the transmission is overfull and the pressure in the unit is forcing out the excess. Also, it is possible that the transmission is overheating and boiling the the fluid.
To check the transmission fluid in a 1998 Ford Contour, first ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and the engine is running at normal operating temperature. Locate the transmission dipstick, usually found near the back of the engine bay, and remove it. Wipe it clean, reinsert it fully, and then remove it again to check the fluid level; it should be within the marked range on the dipstick. If it is an automatic transmission, then it should have a dipstick to check the fluid level. Depending on the make and model, the location of this dipstick will vary. If it is a manual transmission, then the fluid level really can't be checked and it will not have a dipstick.
