There are several potential reasons why the transmission in a 1993 Aerostar van won't shift into overdrive. Common issues include low transmission fluid levels, which can affect shifting performance, or a faulty overdrive solenoid that controls the shifting mechanism. Additionally, problems with the vehicle's throttle position sensor or issues with the transmission itself, such as worn components or internal damage, could also prevent the shift into overdrive. It's advisable to have a professional mechanic diagnose the issue for accurate troubleshooting and repair.
there is a small string ,and spring connecting the gear selector needle, and the shift collar on the steering column. that is what has to be replaced. you should be able to remove parts of the dash to get to it. It usually isn't a big job.
Even after pushing the overdrive cancel button again ? to allow the overdrive feature On my Ford Explorer with the column shift automatic , the overdrive switch is on the end of the gear selector lever
The shift linkage may become sloppy due to the retaining bolts for the shift bracket loosening. To fix this, look under the dash to the left of the brake pedal. The shift cable comes up from the floor on the left side- follow it to the top, where it connects to the shift bracket that bolts the column shifter. There are two torx bolts (t-27 size) that may be loose that retain the bracket to the column shifter. Tighten these bolts, check to see if the linkage has improved. You may need to readjust the shift indicator after this fix.
posibbly the overdrive sensor we had a 88 ford aerostar that did the same thing
Column shift you can't. Need to replace the whole overdrive switch. Floor Shift, the bezel just pops off and you can access it.
