Lee Iacoca, the Vice President of Ford at the time, had a vision of a US sports car, that carried 4 people, had bucket seats, a floor mounted shifter and weighed less than 2,500 lbs.

The execution of that vision was Joe Oros, the chief designer for the Ford studio back then. And because of other looming projects, they actually completed the prototype for approval in 3 weeks.

Two other divisions were vying for the prize too, but Iacocca chose theirs. Although Iacocca is known for the creation of the Mustang, it's not as well known that in the 1970's, many Ford engineers felt he'd lost that vision and the car was straying too far from its roots, causing the huge decrease in sales from earliler versions.
