Two automatic transmissions were available in 1986. Three speed automatic (says PRND21 on shift indicator on dash on console) is a Turbo Hydramatic 125C (TH125C). Later models it was called the 3T40. Four speed automatic (says PRN@D21 on shift indicator, and says "AUTOMATIC OVERDRIVE" in tinier letters over that) is a Turbo-Hydramatic 440-T4. Later models had the 4T60 which is a different transmission entirely.

Check the gas filter it could be plugged (The gas filter has been checked and recently changed, because that's what we thought was happening.. but did not fix the problem.) The part costs about $40 and the gasket another $5-10. You can change the parts in your driveway in about 90 minutes.
