You may possibly have a universal joint in the driveshaft going out. There are joints at both ends of the shaft and when they begin to go bad, they get play in them, and then you get metal to metal contact which could be the chirp and then the clunk when the play in the joint is taken up. That is what I would check first before looking into rearend problems.
I have a 1997 Tahoe that does the same thing. After replacing the transmission, rear end, and drive shaft, and speaking with countless professionals it is a slip yoke problem. The splines of the drive shaft and the yoke are made of 2 different metals. One harder than the other so they wear groves and get stuck. The dealer is quite aware of the problem and will offer to lube it with "special" grease. I find it doesn't last long on mine like they claim it will. The only other option I have been given is to change the parts. But they also said it would do it again.
its called slipped gears. your gears are old and not responding fast enough so they slip and your truck makes a big clunk sound when it changes right? mine does the same thing. look into an overhaul (about $800-$1000) or a rebuilt, but that's more expensive and could cause more problems later if the trannie doesnt match the specs of YOUR Tahoe...their all different
steering shaft "clunk" and broken speedometer. Both can be fixed by dealer and if under 70,000 miles should be fixed under warranty.
Need to check the rear u-joint in the drive shaft.
You're a clunk-head...
it could possible be the U-Joint which is a cheap and easy fix. it's connected to your drive shaft.
A really badly worn universal joint might be the problem. get under there and see if the drive shaft has any play in it, side to side or back and forth, if so or if you go from drive to reverse and hear a clunk or like you said a chirp the universal is done. Don't worry they are cheap. Secondly or if the universal isn't the problem look at the motor and transmission mounts
loud clunk when you put into gear usually means universal joint or joints are going bad, some labor involved but low cost.. u joints connect driveshaft ends to transmission and rear end

The rubber isolators in the engine mounts have worn out or the CV joints in the drive shafts are worn out.
The universal joint(s) on the driveshaft are bad.
