"Hemi" is short for hemispherical, which refers to the shape of the combustion chamber. Instead of flat or wedge shaped they're round at the top.

Is a 383 engine a hemi?

No, a 383 engine is not a Hemi. The 383 is a V8 engine commonly associated with Chrysler's small-block family, while a Hemi refers specifically to engines with a hemispherical combustion chamber design, which are typically found in Chrysler's larger displacement engines, like the 426 Hemi. While some 383 engines may feature similar performance characteristics, they do not have the Hemi design.

The 1968 Dodge Charger typically featured a bright orange engine color for its 383 and 440 cubic inch V8 engines, known as "Hemi Orange." However, for the 426 Hemi engine, the color was also Hemi Orange but had some variations based on specific production runs. Always refer to documentation or original specifications for the most accurate color reference.

Hemi actually is a short form for Hemisphere. The term refers to a hemi engine which has been described as an internal combustion engine in which the combustion chambers are of hemispherical form. What is needed to put a 5.7 liter hemi in to a 98' dodge Dakota?

Obviously a 5.7 Hemi, a trans for the Hemi, wire harness and computers for the Hemi, Additional abs sensors for the Hemi, Some possible frame modifications for the mounts. You would basically need a donor truck, and have to swap everything under the hood, and you would stil have computer issues. The engine computer on the Hemi requires front abs sensors. The Dakota normally doesnt have 4 wheel abs. A large percentage of Hemi trucks also have the anti theft (chipped) key. You would possibly have to install that system too. Basically, more work than it is worth.
