My best guess is that either the key fob has died and needs to be replaced, or the battery or batteries have gone dead. If you've replaced the batteries, most likely you will have to reprogram the key fob. This procedure varies from make to make, so I can't give you a definitive answer on how to program yours. Autozone, for one, has a key fob tester. It detects whether or not it emits a signal. Presuming new batteries, if it doesn't emit a signal, it's dead.
There are some good sites on Ebay to purchase new key fobs at reasonable prices. They will also send you programming instructions.
