One possibility: My 1994 Dakota did the same thing and was caused by a faulty fuel pump module.

Cold air blowing out of the heater is a sure sign of low coolant. Antifreeze running out of the front of the motor _could_ be a bad water pump. The two go together like ham & eggs.

1997 was the first year for that body style 1996 was the last year of the first generation Dakota.
Take a look at the door jam switch. It is just like any other switch, it turns the circut off and on. If it has gone bad it might not be turning the circuit off.
if you like the ride you have go to dodge for oem parts. i've found they tend to last longer than aftermarket.
Crawl under the truck and take a look.
