If your car is in first gear then you are in drive. Dont mix up the differences between manual and automatics transmissions
Need a new gearbox. You get a grinding noise only in first gear when you accelerate fast . second gear and the rest should be fine.
My 1997 would not shift out of first gear, was 'throttle position sensor'.
Assuming automatic transmission, brake bands need adjustment/replacement
1 and only 1
put trans in neutral and put 4wheel in gear then go to drive in stop mode only
Only if you change the drive gear. The gear is different on the 289/302/351W distributor. Outside of that it will work.
yes it can. only if you drive carefully IE you don't brake hard or accelerate quickly .
Is it shifting thru the gears, stuck in first gear or not moving at all while in gear? If stuck in first gear only, is the speedometer working? If so it could be the VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR. It is about $20 to $35 and located on the transmission. It controls the shifts and the speedo. If not moving or slipping real bad, check the fluid level and look at the color and smell it for a burnt odor.
Most vehicles it means you have selected forward drive frist gear only. It should say in first gear only When the gear selector points to this position. second gear would be D2 Third D3 and some vehicles have OD which stands for overdrive In this position transmission shafts automaticly up and down by itself as needed by demand.
The " D " is the drive position so the transmission ( transaxle ) only uses the first ( 3 ) gears and not the overdrive gear ( the 4th gear ) that you normally get if you select the " D " with the circle around it
If it is popping out of gear only under acceleration and not other times this could mean there is a transaxle problem. May be time for a rebuild. Make sure there are no problems with the shifter bushings both under the shifter and at the transaxle nosecone. Otherwise be prepared to get a new transaxle.
My guess, it's your transmission. First gear may be screwed. Try starting off in 2 then throw it in drive once your moving. You should get this taken care of, it will only get worse.
