There are many reasons it could be on. One cannot answer this question without more information. Information that doesn't come to you by looking at the light. Go to a local auto parts store like Advanced Auto or O Rileys auto parts and ask them to read the computer. I have done this many times. A lot of the auto stores do not charge to do this. If you take it to a shop, they like to charge the hook up fee of 75- $100 or more just to tell you. The computer will give you a code and the store can give you an idea of what the problem is by the code. Ask around!! You should be able to find it FREE..
Thousands of things. Take it to a mechanic who has a scanner and they can tell you what the problem is.
Have vehicle scanned to determine the problem
does the light illuminate during start up? If not the lamp is burned out. If it does, then the engine computer is likely at fault.

Generally, a check engine light is lit when there is a problem in the emissions or somthing that is affecting the effectiveness of the emissions. I have a 1998 ford grand Marquis- and the problem is the air suspension light stays on- how to fix this problem
To reset the check engine light on a 1995 Mercury Grand Marquis, you can disconnect the battery by removing the negative terminal for about 10-15 minutes. This will clear the vehicle's computer and reset the check engine light. Alternatively, you can use an OBD-I scanner to clear the codes. However, it's important to address any underlying issues that caused the light to come on to ensure proper vehicle function.
The check engine light indicates that the computer has detected a "fault". Use a code scanner to find out what the computer has detected, that is PROBABLY the reason the engine is running poorly.
There are pages and pages of things that can cause a check engine light. You need to have it checked with a scantool. Then the code can be diagnosed and repaired.
Have the codes read.
You can but the check engine light will remain on and it won't pass an emissions test.
