There can be a few things leading to this. First suggestion is to change your ECTS. New ones are cheap at the dealer and are brass. A good cleaning of the throttle body is also suggested.

I have a 1997 Chevy Malibu with 176k on it. Never had a new engine or anything, runs like a champ. It has been making a knocking noise when its cold.(until car is warm) for a long time now. It still makes a little one while at idle, not loud or can even really be heard though.

You need to check the u joints at the front wheels.
An expert would have to hear the sound for a diagnosis. It may be your main bearings are knocking. If it also happens if you lift your foot sharply OFF the accelarator, then that's a sure thing. - Only way to check for sure is to fit an oil pressure gauge.
if it is making a loud knocking noise it is about to go out If when you put it in to gear, it jumps in to it and the car starts to move instantly then the converter may be shot.
Bad rod bearings ? Bad main bearings ? try a broom stick to see where it is located makes diagnosis easier

Usually, most knocking is from the muffler or exhaust pipe vibrating or bumping on the frame or something. Look for a damaged or broken strap.
