The OBDII system in your vehicle has several sensors that monitor conditions and "report" to the system's computer. When a sensor senses a malfunction, a signal is sent to the computer and the Check Engine light will illuminate. To find the malfunction you have to have the sytem scanned by an OBDII scanner tool for the trouble code(s). AutoZone and similar auto supply stores offer free scans.

To reset the check engine light on a 1995 Nissan Altima, first, disconnect the negative battery terminal and leave it disconnected for about 10-15 minutes. This will reset the vehicle's computer and clear the check engine light. Reconnect the battery terminal and start the engine to see if the light has turned off. If the light persists, there may be an underlying issue that needs to be addressed.
