this happened to my 2006 Toyota highlander...look under hood...a piece of foam was stuck up under parking brake so it couldn't shift into park
Parking brake applied or stuck on.Incorrect fluid level in trans. Transmission is bad.
Could be a number of things. Make sure that you are setting the parking brake when you park, get into the habit of doing this all the time. Takes quite a bit of load off the parking pawl - especially when parked on an incline or hill. Make sure you step on the brake pedal before you shift out of park. Make sure the shift button is completely depressed before you step on the brakes. If the transaxle seems to be completely stuck - then you have an emergency shift release under a plastic cover (raised plastic clip on the shift assembly). You can pry that up with a flat bladed screwdriver, then insert the screwdriver in the opening to manual release the shifter. If the parking pawl is damaged or there is an issue with the shift interlock, you may find shifting out of park difficult to impossible.
Check to see if stop lights are working - shift interlock and stop lights are the same circuit. Check the fuses Check the operation of the stop light switch Try turning key to 1st (unlock) position shift to neutral to start vehicle and then shift to drive

To release a stuck parking brake on a 1998 Ford F-150, first ensure that the vehicle is in park and the engine is running. Try pressing the brake pedal firmly while simultaneously pulling the parking brake release handle. If it remains stuck, you may need to check for any obstructions or corrosion in the brake cable or mechanism, as these can cause the brake to seize. If the problem persists, it's advisable to consult a mechanic for further inspection and repair.
Most likely, the switch that controls your parking light is stuck.
