To make money for Henry Ford and the Ford Motor Company. Henry Ford knew that if he created an inexpensive, simply to operate, and simple to repair vehicle that was able to travel the terrible roads of the day he would sell all he could build and become a rich man. He was right as he sold over 15 million.
