A Few Key things need to be checked,

Fuel Flow to the CP3 Is required to be AT or above 460mL in 10 Seconds.

Code Check (to determine any errors the computer has found)

The Next big Item would be Fuel rail pressure, which should be at least 5,000 PSI or more while starting, and 19,000PSI to 26,000 PSI while running. The Bosch Common rail injectors are extremely susceptible to small debris, Water and poor filter change schedule's. If these are over looked failed injectors will eventually stick the ugly heads out. Injectors run from $155.00 a piece for rebuilds to $300.00 for new nozzles and body's (commonly needed in trucks using aftermarket products due to increased rail pressure).

AFE Offers a 2 Micron filter for the truck, You might look into one! Also make sure you drain the fuel filter's water separator frequently!

If the injectors are not working properly there's lots of ways to determine if their the cause of your problem. The easiest at home would be to mist diesel fuel (Not much , excess fuel can run the engine even after you've shut it off) into the inducer of the turbo, OR disconnect the grid heater wiring, and give the truck a VERY small shot of starting fluid. It would be advised that an experienced tech do this part!

If the truck starts and continues to run, Injectors would be expected.

If it only runs for a moment and dies I would look elsewhere.

Other acceptable areas would be the FCA on the back of the CP3 pump, (visible on the driver side of the engine, small black plug) which controls the rail pressure and can sometime "hang".

Also check the A/C Pressure transistor (behind the AC compressor) the wires can short and cause cam/crank failure and codes, and in some cases a no start condition. No start would be associated with a cam or crank sensor code.

The key can also fail, loosing the programmed key number. At which point the truck needs to go to the dealership for a flash with the DRBIII.

Please remember dont try starting fluid or diesel fuel WITH OUT DISCONNECTING THE GRID HEATER WIRING (Located on the lower portion of the intake horn below dipstick).

NEVER DISCONNECT A COMMON RAIL INJECTION LINE WHILE TRYING TO START OR WHILE THE ENGINE IS RUNNING! Death or serious injury could occur!

Is a Dodge Cummins a good vehicle?

Cummins is good. Dodge is not. Cummins has always been a good engine. Dodge is lucky to have the contract with Cummins. I have 2 Dodge Cummins (an 1992 and 2006). Both have electrical problems and the transmission in my 2006 isn't great and that's with stock power and only 93,000 miles. The 12-valve Cummins is all mechanical- easy and cheap to get power out of it. The 24-valve Cummins is computerized- have to buy a programmer. The best combination would be a Cummins in a Chevy.
