A bad starter can cause a Mercury Grand Marquis to not start. A bad alternator or a problem with the security system can be the cause for the car not starting.
most merc 50hp with efi and electric start have a 18amp alternator. This from mid 90's to now

Sometimes when a car over heats and it is really warm outside your car will not start due to " vapor lock "
it might be the alternator, try and get it tested. if the car won't start the battery will also be dead, you could replace the battery and drive it to get the alternator tested at an autozone or advance auto parts for free.
Had a 98 with same prob. Check MAF sensor
Dis-connect the battery, and wait a couple of minutes before you start working on it.
There is a amber light in the in the upper righthand side of the dash cluster that will come on for a few seconds after you start the car that says ABS.
