it is too old and or it is damaged and the plastic "reverse" lock is broken and jammed best bet just take it off, it only takes 5 mins and it wont affect the shifting at all especially with experienced drivers.. or you can get a B&M short throw shifter they work great and also take very little time at all to install..
The Ford Contour utilizes a safety feature that keeps the transmission locked unless the brake is engaged, so it can't simply be 'knocked' out of gear. Mine wouldn't shift one day, so I had to give it a little He-Man, and now it shifts - but the lockout doesn't work now either. Oh, well. I never used it anyway.
It is usaully in the glove box on most cars check in there, it should be a little round button
For cars that have an automatic transmission, overdrive lockout turned 'off' (overdrive will engage), is the default option.
