The above answer is pretty general and may not be your problem. Without anymore information on your problem, here are a couple of general known issues with your transmission (assuming auto trans):
These transmissions are prone to heatup very quickly while backing up especially with a trailer connected in hot weather. ie playing around trying to get your camper "just right" on the campsite can he a common scenario.
In wet snowy weather the, the A/C condensor in front of the trans rad will get blocked with snow and again, if you are working the truck fairly hard with a trailer in tow, it can overheat.
Beyond that, lack of maintenance, age, blocked cooler (internally) can all play a factor

They are not interchangeable. The 2014 transmission is fully computer controlled, the 2001 uses a completely different system.
