It will definatly bolt up to the motor, but it has no transfer case so you wouldn't have 4x4. the 4x4 and 4x2 trannies are different. i have a 2000 Dakota rt with a 46re so i know dodge trannies

sorry to say this but it will not swap. they will bolt up but the 1996 is a computer controled trans. without the computer it will stay in low gear.
It will bolt up, but it will not shift. The 1995 is hydraulic controlled. The 1997 is electronically controlled.
The 42 re from behind a 3.9L will not work in place of a 45rfe behind a 3.7L or 4.7L.
