You may need another transmission if your Ford Explorer will not drive in reverse. The best way to find out is to take it to a local mechanic.
slips or makes noise and wont go n reverse
Sometimes the torquconverter can fail causing the engin to stall. In reverse it lock in full torqu. In fwd gears it slips. This is only one idea.
1998 ford explorer transmission reverse won't engage, acts like it is in neutral.
no
Time for a rebuild.

Everything points to the transmission being rebuilt or replaced. The reverse band broke, came loose etc.
The A4LD transmission is the weakest part of the 91-94 explorer. It is likely that your transmission has failed.
The shift linkage has probably come loose. To fix with vehucle not running...put gear shift in park, block the tires so truck does not roll, and you must get under the vehicle and manually change the shift lever to park position on the transmission. Once you do this you must tighten the bold on the linkage rod so that it no longer slips.
Transmission is going out. Reverse is always the 1st one to go.
check transmission fluid, make sure it is all the way into reverse and make sure the emergency brake is not engaged.
