its misfiring. check the igniton coil housing. i have gone through 3 in 1 year
Ihad the same probleme and i chanched the spark plus and cables

The engine began sputtering and then it went dead.

You can drive it in for repair , just avoid anyrapid acceleration or deceleration because you can damage the catalyticconverter

When ever the service engine light is blinking you risk doing serious damage to the catalytic converter. I would recommend not using the vehicle until the problem is fixed. Replacing the cat can be very expensive. Have a trusted mechanic diagnose and correct the engine problem.

I sometimes sputter when I'm nervous. Please reword the question and tell me what year and engine and describe what you are doing with the car when "sputtering" occurs. Would help if you can think of additional description of what you mean by "sputtering".
