(in the US) The question is a true statement, but they are not limited to that specific narrow role.

the job of protecting the rights is the congress
The main job of the Supreme Court is to uphold the US Constitution. It is the highest court in the US and its job is to interpret the meaning of the law.
Charging and trying defendants for breaking federal laws.
The Judicial Branch is one of three independent parts of the US Government, responsible for the federal court system. The primary responsibility of the judicial branch is to interpret and apply the laws, and ensure their constitutionality. The three branches of government share responsibility for the legal system. The Legislative branch (Congress) creates law; the Judicial branch determines their constitutionality resolves disputes; and the Executive branch enforces the laws. The Federal courts mediate disputes between two or more parties using the Constitution, federal law, and previously decided cases (called "precedents") to determine the appropriate solution. The US District Courts have original (trial) jurisdiction for most federal criminal and civil cases. A judge or jury listens to testimony, examines evidence, and attempts to determine whether the prosecution (in a criminal trial) or plaintiff (in a civil trial) has met their burden of proof. US Bankruptcy Courts, the Court of International Trade, and the US Court of Claims have original jurisdiction over special subject matter that can't be heard in US District Court. The twelve regional US Courts of Appeals Circuit Courts, sometimes called "intermediate appellate" courts," hear appeals of cases from US District Courts as well as decisions of certain federal agencies. The US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit (the thirteenth Circuit Court) hears appeals of specialized cases related to patent laws, as well as appeals from the Court of International Trade and the US Court of Claims. The Supreme Court of the United States is head of the Judicial Branch, and the highest appellate court in the nation. They review a limited number of appeals from both state and federal courts each year, choosing only federal question cases they consider to be of national or constitutional importance. These Courts were created by Congress under the authority of Article III of the Constitution. There are other courts, called Article I tribunals, such as US Tax Court, administrative law tribunals, and Military Courts, that are not considered part of the Judicial Branch, although the Article III appellate courts sometimes review cases from Article I courts. All court cases start at the "Original jurisdiction" level. This level is where most cases originate from and are carried out. If either the plaintiff or defendant does not like the way the court ruled at the original level they can take it to the appellate courts. At this level they re-appeal their case to a different judge and jury. They also have the option of taking their case to the Supreme Court. The reason why we have three levels is because every level has its own necessary job. The Supreme Court hears cases and determines constitutionality. The appellate court is for appeals and the original courts are where cases are first heard.

No. Only trial courts use juries. The job of the jury is to determine issues of fact. The job of a judge is to determine issues of law. After the trial court is over there may be an appeal. The appellate court will review issues of law. They do not review issues of fact except for extreme cases. Supreme courts will hear cases in which there are complex issues of law that need review or clarification.
If a federal court only has appellate jurisdiction it can only hear appeals of cases that have been tried in lower federal courts and can't conduct its own trials. For example, the US Court of Appeals Circuit Courts have only appellate jurisdiction, primarily over cases tried in the 94 US District Courts. The Supreme Court of the United States is a federal court with appellate jurisdiction; however, it also exercises original jurisdiction over disputes between the states. The Supreme Court may review appeals from both federal and state courts, as long as the appeal contains a (preserved) federal question. This means the case must involve federal law, US treaties, or US Constitutional issues.

USUALLY A TRIAL COURT IS WHEN SOMEONE IS TAKEN TO COURT FOR SOME REASON OR ANOTHER. THE APPELLATE COURT IS WHEN YOU WANT TO APPEAL A DECISION THAT WAS MADE BY THE JUDGE A trial court hears testimony, examines evidence, rules on the admissibility of evidence and objections of trial counsel, issues a judgment on the case, and imposes sentence or penalties/awards. A trial court may also impanel juries and give them instructions for deliberating. An appellate court only reviews the decisions of lower courts, which include trial courts and in some cases lower appellate courts. They do not hear testimony or examine new evidence. They only review the record of the lower court, and may hear oral arguments from the attorneys involved in the appeal. An appellate court may uphold the decision of the trial court, or return the case to the trial court for reconsideration or a new trial.
