France helped the colonists in the Revolutionary War after the battle of Saratoga in which the colonists proved they had a chance in winning the war. However, France only helped the colonists because they were mad at Britain and did not want Britain to win the war.

Which countries participated in the war and provided aid for the colonists during the American Revolutionary war?

Later in the war, the world powers of France and Spain sided with the American colonies against their traditional enemy of England (in name Great Britain, but in effect England). In miltary terms, the French alliance was extremely helpful, as Admiral de Grasse destroyed a fleet of the much-vaunted British Navy at the Battle of Chesapeake, and General Rochambeau's French army was instrumental in assuring General Washington's victory at the Battle of Yorktown. Other countries may have supported the Americans, but the contributions of France and Spain were the largest and most decisive. * Germans, Africans, and American native tribes also fought on the British side in unit-strength during this war, and probably to a lesser extent on the American side. * The French Maquis de Lafayette, the German Baron von Steuben, and the Polish Casimir Pulaski also pledged themselves to the colonists, and US Navy submarines were named after them in the 20th Century. Individual volunteers from other countries are possible.

Actually France, Spain, the Netherlands and Russia also helped the Americans. Technically, through Baron Friedrich von Steuben Germany had helped, too along with Thaddeus Kosciuszko who was Polish. So really France, Spain, the Netherlands, Russia, Germany, and Poland helped the Americans
