Modern doctors, studying the record of his treatment (which was, at least, very specific) believe with rest and good supportive care, he would have recovered. But because it was their "nothing else to do" treatment of the era, he was "bled" - several times. The cumulative effect of the amount of blood lost almost certainly hastened his death, if it didn't cause it outright - and it may have.
