John Hancock was the first leader of the united states, he started in 1776 when the united states first declared independence from Britain, HE was the head of the continental congress. During this time George Washington was the General of the Armies. George Washington didn't become president until 1783 after the second congressional congress was formed.

George Washington was not the leader of any political party in early U.S. history. In fact, he was opposed to the concept of parties. He even stated in his farewell speech that parties would eventually bring trouble to this country.

Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson were the two leaders of the first major parties, which were the federalists and anti-federalists.
