The Constitution created a national government made up of three separate branches (separation of powers) and provided for a system of checks and balances so that each branch could check the power of the other two branches, thus preventing any one branch from becoming too powerful. The Tenth Amendment to the Constitution also provides that powers not given to the federal government, nor specifically denied the states, belongs to the people and the states.

They added the checks and balances system. The President appoints the Supreme Court justices, and reserves the right to Veto against any bills that congress passes. Congress has to confirm the President's appointment to the Supreme Court, and can overrule the President's veto with a 2/3's majority. The Supreme Court can declare a law to be unconstitutional.

That's how I remember it. There may be some mistakes, but that is roughly what happens.

The framers of the Constitution established the checks and balances system which demands that the three branches of the government must keep one another in line. Through expecting the executive, legislative, and judicial branches to monitor the actions of the others, there was less opportunity for one to take too much power.

They did nothing. They weren’t worried about the size of government. If a government works the size doesn’t make a difference. If the people want services and the ability to get things done the size of government may be needed. For over 30 years it has been a bogus argument concerning government size.
