The Russian Empire collapsed from a revolution, called the February Revolution, that overthrew the Imperial government and deposed the Tsar forcing him to abdicate in 1917. Although it was specifically the February Revolution of 1917 that brought about its collapse, there are various factors that contributed to it. These include the Tsar, who was at this time Nicholas II, being a weak and basically incompetent and inefficient leader as well as Russia's disastrous decision to enter World War I. The military of the Empire was highly outdated; under equipped, not well trained and not well led and this only led to quick casualties on the front by the millions. In addition, there were food shortages at home and many food riots broke out and many people who worked in factories began protests in demand for better working conditions and better pay and also rioted over food. And just as things couldn't get any worse, the Tsar, already incompetent at running a country and definitely incompetent at commanding a military, left to take personal command of the losing Russian forces at the front, thus leaving his wife, Tsaritsa Alexandra, who's never had a day of political experience in her life, to govern the country as it rapidly slipped into chaos. To make matters worse again, she relied heavily on an illiterate, self-proclaimed monk named Grigori Rasputin, needless to say that was a disaster.

Eventually, things escalated and one event (which included Rasputin's planned murder) led to another (which included the February Revolution just two months later) and before you knew it: a group that consisted of dissent army officers, peasants, workers, politicians, etc, all teamed up and seized power from the Imperial Government and forced the Tsar to return and abdicate his position and leave in exile.

Reason why all this information is important is because although the February Revolution was the EXACT thing that caused the Empire to collapse, there were many significant events that led to the buildup of the revolution so you'll know that a band of citizens of multiple classes and occupations didn't just gather and overthrow an Empire that had been in power for nearly two centuries for nothing. It's important to know what caused the Revolution that became the exact thing that caused the Empire's collapse, and it was because the Empire was an outdated, mediocre, unstable, underdeveloped, autocratic and corrupt government that had little, if any, future chances of changing should it existed any longer.
