I am not sure what you want to know. After the colonists won the Revolutionary War, a convention was held to draw up the US constitution. After nine colonies ratified it, it became the supreme law of the land. The Constitution specifies that a President will be elected and gives details on how it should be done. Accordingly, a election was held and George Washington, who had led the colonies to victory, was the unanimous choice of the electors.

The President and vice-president were elected by the electors from all the states, just as they are now. What was different is that there was only one election and every elector had two votes. The man who finished second in the balloting for President was made vice-president.

The problem was that the man who came in second might be the the main opponent of the winner.
Amendment 12 changed the format, calling for separate votes for president and for vice-president with each elector voting once in each election.

Each elector cast two votes. The second place finisher was made vice-president and, of course, the one with the most votes was made president.
