To understand the relationship of a limited government to the political and economic freedoms conferred upon American citizens by their Constitution, we need to specifically identify these freedoms:

Political Rights and Freedoms

  • Amendment I: Right to freedom of religion, speech, and press
  • Amendment I: Right to assemble peaceably, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances
  • Amendment II: Right to keep and bear arms in common defense
  • Amendment III: Right not to have soldiers quartered in one's home in peacetime without the consent of the owner, nor in time of war except as prescribed by law
  • Amendment IV: Right to be secure against "unreasonable searches and seizures''
  • Amendment V: Right in general not to be held to answer criminal charges except upon indictment by a grand jury
  • Amendment V: Right not to be put twice in jeopardy for the same offense
  • Amendment V: Right not to be compelled to be a witness against oneself in a criminal case
  • Amendment V: Right not to be deprived of life, liberty, or property without due process of law
  • Amendment V: Right to just compensation for private property taken for public use
  • Amendment VI: Right in criminal prosecution to a speedy and public trial by an impartial jury, to be informed of the charges, to be confronted with witnesses, to have a compulsory process for calling witnesses in defense of the accused, and to have legal counsel
  • Amendment VII: Right to a jury trial in suits at common law involving over $20
  • Amendment VIII: Right not to have excessive bail required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted

Economic Rights and Freedoms

  • Amendment V, XIV: The right or ability to enter into agreements with others. "Freedom of contract" is "a basic and fundamental right reserved to the people" by the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments to the Constitution which prohibit "the deprivation of liberty without due process of law."

  • Amendment V: The right to own and dispose of property.

    • Americans as consumers are free to buy and sell any legal product. This is based upon an economic system called free market.

    • Americans as producers are free to change service or product prices, or to sell any legal item they choose. This is another component of that economic system called free market.

    • American businesses have the freedom to compete with one another for consumers of their products. This economic system is called free competition.

    • Americans have the freedom to earn a profit. This is called profit motive.

This is what my civics book says. I take NO CREDIT for it. It all belongs to the author and producer. © 2006 Aventa Learning.

What are vertical and horizontal allegiances?

In the sociological, economic, and political realms, vertical allegiances are those between superiors and inferiors. Examples would be work supervisors and ordinary workers; parents and children; military ranks at all levels and those they outrank. Horizontal allegiances are those between individuals where no one outranks anyone else. Workers in factories, siblings, military men of the same rank. Bureaucracies heavily depend on vertical allegiances to organize productive activity. In our personal and social lives we all depend on horizontal allegiances for the bulk of our affective relationships (friendship, love, marriage).

What Country has an oligarchy government?

An oligarchy is a control system of in which a small groups are in charge (rule by a few). It can be believed that any system eventually evolves into an oligarchy (the iron law of oligarchy).According to this school of thought, 21st Century democracies should be considered as oligarchies because the actual differences between viable political rivals are small, the oligarchic elite impose strict limits on what constitutes an acceptable and respectable political position, and politicians' careers depend heavily on unelected economic and media elites. Thus the popular phrase: there is only one political party, the incumbent party.Corporate of Foundational oligarchy is a form of power, governmental or operational, where power effectively rests with a small, elite group of inside individuals, sometimes from a small group of educational institutions, or influential economic entities or devices, such as banks, commercial entities that act in complicity with, or at the whim of the oligarchy, often with little or no regard for governmental or constitutionally protected prerogative. It is difficult to quantify all systems or that contain established oligarchies. Often, the oligarchy will not be openly admitted, but must be perceived through the actions of its sustainers and institutions involved in the outcome.Examples of current day oligarchies are most governmental and economic entities.

What is a political machine?

A political machine is an unofficial system of political organization based on patronage, the spoils system, "behind-the-scenes" control, and longstanding political ties within the structure of a representative democracy. Machines sometimes have a boss, and always have a long-term corps of dedicated workers who depend on the patronage generated by government contracts and jobs. Machine politics has existed in many United States cities, especially between about 1875 and 1950, but continuing in some cases down to the present day. It is also common (under the name clientelism or political clientelism) in Latin America, especially in rural areas. Japan's Liberal Democratic Party is often cited as another political machine, maintaining power in suburban and rural areas through its control of farm bureaus and road construction agencies. The key to a political machine is patronage: holding public office implies the ability to do favors (and also the ability to profit from graft). Political machines generally steer away from issues-based politics, favoring a quid pro quo (something for something) with certain aspects of a barter economy or gift economy: the patron or "boss" does favors for the constituents, who then vote as they are told to. Sometimes this system of favors is supplemented by threats of violence or harassment toward those who attempt to step outside of it.

Why is autocracy important?

Autocracy can provide decisive leadership and rapid decision-making, particularly in times of crisis or when swift action is needed. It allows for streamlined governance without the delays often associated with democratic processes, which can be beneficial in addressing urgent issues. However, while it can bring stability and efficiency, it also risks suppressing individual freedoms and dissent, raising concerns about human rights and accountability. The effectiveness and importance of autocracy often depend on the context and the leadership style of the autocrat.
