He dresses much like other well-bred Englishmen in daily life, wearing a good quality suit and tie when in the city and an equally good quality tweed jacket and baggy trousers when in the country. He will usually wear tailor-made clothes that will last him a long time and which he will replace only when his wife decides to give them to charity. English gentlemen - and certainly dukes - make a point of never wearing designer underwear, which they consider something for football players. The good old Y-front is their model of choice. Scottish dukes may on occasion put on highland costume of a tweed jacket and kilt. A photo of the duke of Argyll and Sutherland once taken on a windy day clearly showed that a Scottish duke will stick to the tradition of wearing nothing under the kilt. The fact that he was meeting the Queen that day didn't deter him.

Only on very special occasions like the opening of Parliament, royal weddings etc. may dukes and other members of the British nobility wear ceremonial clothing which will smell strongly of moth balls..
