The way of life of the citizens of a country is greatly affected by that nations government. Examples are many, however, here are some basic reasons how people are affected:

* A totalitarian government limits the freedom of its people. It can strike fear into all of the nations people whether they are near the "top" of the government's power structure or well beneath it;

* Governments can enact laws that discriminate against minorities within the country. This can ferment into conflicts and violence among the countries citizens;

* Governments can use their power to tax, in order to punish suspected enemies of the State. Placing high taxes on any group of people or on organizations and businesses can control them; and

* Governments can make certain products people use and like to be illegal. Prohibition in the United States is a perfect example of this.
