Since the United States was just forming some probably felt loyal to their town/state first and then to the 13 colonies. One of the weak points to the Articles of Confederation was that state and local loyalty was very strong and most people didn't have a national loyalty yet. So, if polls had been taken in 1780 I would guess they would state their state and local area.
The New England colonies relied on fishing to make a living. They also relied on the help from the Native Americans in the area.
