Washington was the only president never elected to his office - he was acclaimed to it. He served two terms, and could have served to his death, but thought no one person should serve more than two terms.

Two terms, 8 years. He was appointed to the first term by the Continental Congress, and elected the second time in the first general election in the history of America.

While the rule about a President serving only two terms did not come about until after FDR, Washington served two terms and then chose not to run again.

George Washington was elected to two terms. He had not meaningful opposition but he was duly elected in accordance with the new constitution. He no doubt could have been re-elected as long as wanted to serve, but he believed that no one should serve for more than two terms. His first term was a little short due to the difficulty in setting up the election machinery.
