The Roaring Twenties are important because it was the time period in history after WWI when people became rich from the stock market and started buying stuff on debit and credit and getting loans from banks (which they couldn't pay off) and once so many got loans then inflation happened leading to the Great Depression...
For the people of the 20's, America was in a economical boom:
- with people earning higher wages, people could spend more money on household appliances like fridges and radios
- mass entertainment such as sports like Baseball and football
- The Jazz Age involved partying and new dances crazes like the Johnston
- Women had more freedom e.g. Flappers
- Cars were affordable, almost every home had one
- The development of Hollywood and the first "talkies"
- Radio broadcasting was becoming a bigger phenomanom

The 1920s had many names such as the Roaring 20s, the Jazz Age, and the Age of Intolerance. The 1920s separated the world wars. Many things happened in the Roaring Twenties, such as the sinking of the ship Titanic (1912), the invention of stainless steel (1913), the completion of the Panama Canal (1914) and women received the right to vote by the 19th Amendment, but they still had little interest in politics. In 1919, the eighteenth Amendment passed the act of Prohibition, which made drinking or even possessing alcohol illegal. The general reason for this amendment was to lower crime and to improve the general status of life, but the opposite thing happened. Crime increased as people rebelled against not being able to drink alcohol. Many illegal bars were created to provide drinks for the people that required alcoholic beverages. This time period also included bathtub gin and other homemade alcohols. Gangsters profited during this decade by smuggling alcohol and distributing it to different illegal businesses. Al Capone was one of these gangsters who made $105 million a year by smuggling alcohol into the United States. Soon, the 1920s finally ended but little did people know that it was the starting of the Great Depression. This was written by 1ofmany. this was written in 2009.
The 1920s was called various names such as “The Jazz Age,” the Age of Intolerance,” and the “Age of Nonsense.” But perhaps the most telling was the “Roaring Twenties.” It was the beginning of modern America, in politics, arts, customs and fads, literature, sports, etc. Americans felt a relief following the Great War. The nation had survived the deadly worldwide influenza epidemic of 1918. The Twenties was a time of change for just about all the population. Youthful “Flapper” women provoked the older generation by smoking in public, wearing brief skirts, bobbed hair styles, and the use of lots of makeup. New fads included the Charleston dance, dance marathons, flagpole sitting, and flying stunts in the new airplanes. Many sports became “spectator sports” with Baseball and Babe Ruth perhaps being the biggest.
