No, you do have to be registered though, and every state has provision for unafilliated voters. Some states do require a party registration in order to vote in primary elections, those elections that choose the candidates that will be running in the regular election.

Basically in the Primary Elections - ones held in the spring in most states - you can only vote for people in the party you are registered with. In the General Elections - usually held in November - you can vote for whoever you want no matter what party they are with. If you do not like either person in a race you can leave it blank. You must make at least one selection on a ballot for it to count. Please vote. I would prefer you vote for the person I like - but, you do need to vote. When people quit caring about what happens.....a country is doomed. Persons in the USA are very spoiled and lazy. Over half don't even register to vote. About 80% have no idea how the government works. They always say: The President does this and the President does that but.....Congress makes our laws.

no why would it be?

It is important if you want to run for office or want to have a voice in who runs for office or want to influence the positions taken by party candidates.

No you don't, at least not in a general election, although there are some primary elections in which only members of a party are allowed to vote. And that varies by state.
