I think they elected him because he was a military hero, and contributed to the United States winning the Revolutionary War.
He was a hero of the Revolutionary Texans, a shrewd and popular politician and a recognized Founding Father with proven abilities and strong contacts with the United States.
Dolley Madison is considered to be a hero to some people. Dolley Madison became the wife of the 4th president.
President Monroe sent General Andrew Jackson, the hero of the Battle of New Orleans, to the Florida border in 1818 to stop the incursions.
Thomas Jefferson was elected President, and Aaron Burrwas elected Vice-President in the 1800 Presidential election. The election was decided in the House of Representatives after Jefferson and Burr (from the same political party) inadvertently received the same number of electoral votes.Under the original plan of the Constitution, each elector cast two votes, and the candidate with the second largest number of electoral votes became Vice President. This proved unworkable with the advent of political parties, as each party had to plan some intricate way for two of their candidates to achieve the necessary votes.Technically, both Jefferson and Burr were running for President, and the plan to have Burr receive one fewer vote went awry, each receiving 73 votes. The incumbent, President John Adams, received only 65 votes. The 12th Amendment to the Constitution (ratified June 15, 1804) established separate ballots for President and Vice President, making this type of "tie" impossible and making it unlikely that the elected President and Vice President could be from different parties, as had occurred when Jefferson was the Vice President under Adams (1797-1801).
That man was Ulysses S. Grant. He served in the US Civil war from 1861 to 1865, rising from captain of infantry volunteers to the rank of Lieutenant General and General in Chief of the Union army. He was elected the 18th president in 1868 and occupied that office for eight years from 1869 through 1877.

Grant was elected in 1868, not long after the Civil War. He had become a national hero for his position of supreme commander of the Union forces that finally won the war and ended the fighting. He was nominated by the party of Lincoln without any real opposition. The southern states were not allowed to vote and the Democrat party which had split over slavery was pretty much in disarray.
He was elected president because he was a highly honored hero of the Revolutionary War, and people thought he would make the Articles of Confederation stronger
