The need for parental care and education - among both animals and people - is usually determined by the complexity of the environmental challenges facing the young. These challenges may vary from learning to forage and/or hunt a wide variety of food species through to competing with other highly intelligent creatures of one's own kind in a large social group.

As a rule, the more information or cultural mores that a creature must learn, the more extended the childhood period of dependence. Correspondingly, greater parental investment in such species or cultures tends to result in more prosperous and successful outcomes for their young.

Interestingly this even holds true among humans, in that poorly educated children not only face a lifetime of lower earnings, but also a shorter life expectancy due to more crowded and less hygienic conditions, poorer nutrition, violence, drug and alcohol abuse, and lesser access to medical care.
